Transdermal Diagnostics initiates a £90,000 project with a significant contribution from the Business Innovation Fund

February 2023, Bristol UK. Transdermal Diagnostics has been awarded £36,000 from the Business Innovation Fund programme of the West of England Combined Authority as part of a new project (total value more than £90,000) to work with commercial partners on the productization of its proprietary technology platform in the MedTech sector.

Transdermal Diagnostics is pioneering the development of a wearable device to enhance the prevention, diagnosis, and management of chronic conditions, with diabetes as its initial target. The technology guarantees non-invasive and real-time monitoring of health biomarkers including, of course, glucose. The wearable platform will enable biological insights to empower users to make lifestyle adjustments, to optimise and complement therapeutic interventions and to significantly improve quality of life.

Transdermal Diagnostics’ device comprises a disposable adhesive skin patch connected to reusable electronics. The device communicates wirelessly to a mobile phone via dedicated software for signal processing and readout to the user.

The project will follow a development methodology and stage-gate strategy to progress the product design in close collaboration with electronic hardware and sensor sub-contractors.  The goal is to ensure integration and functionality of a device that is comfortable, suitably sized and acceptable for the intended user and market.

The procurement of services to develop the company’s product is currently open and we are now seeking to identify subcontractors to undertake the following tasks: (a) identification of user requirements and product specification; (b) concept development; (c) prototyping; (d) generation of data for the product technical file. A further key objective is to create a regulatory-approvable product that can be manufactured in high volume using appropriate and sustainable materials at the right cost.

The Business Innovation Fund supports businesses from a wide range of sectors to help develop innovative products, processes and services that not only fulfil market demand, but also deliver industrial growth.

Dr Luca Lipani, Transdermal Diagnostics CEO, comments: “This is a transformative opportunity.  The Business Innovation Fund award initiates the realisation of TD's first product that has the potential, we believe, to improve the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide.”
